Dr. Melodie Macleod Williams Buxman died on 29 June 2003 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Born in 1944 in Schenectady, N.Y., she graduated from Wheaton College and married James Henry Buxman in 1966. She received the M.D. degree in 1970 from the University of California, San Francisco, interned at Sacramento Medical Center, and did her dermatology residency and research fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University. She served on the dermatology faculty at OHSU from 1976-1980, then practiced dermatology privately in Lake Oswego until retirement in 1994. Her past professional affiliations include: President, Oregon Dermatological Society; Board of Directors, Society for Investigative Dermatology; Medical Consultant, Ichthyosis Foundation; and Member, American Foundation for Clinical Research. Her past research travels include McGill University, Montreal Children’s Hospital, Dermatology Departments at UCSF and OHSU, Bucharest, Amsterdam, and throughout the U.S. She received a five-year Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, and grants from the Society for Investigative Dermatology and the Medical Foundation of Oregon. She authored 35 publications. Dr. Buxman is survived by husband Dr. James Buxman, daughter Dr. Heidi Louise (Mrs. Christopher) Williams of Carbondale, Ill., son Alan and daughter Heather of Lake Oswego.
